Mission

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? If someone comes to you, and is naked or without food, and you say to them 'go in peace' but do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? ~ James 2:14-16

First Presbyterian Church in Springfield believes that as a people of faith, we are called to serve. We wish to support the most vulnerable populations - not only through monetary contributions but also through the sharing of our time, abilities, and hands-on assistance. We reach out to our neighbors locally, regionally, nationally and globally.

Our local mission includes addressing food insecurity with
Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry and Philabundance, supporting people who are homeless through Interfaith Hospitality Network, showing love to disadvantaged children at a daycare in West Oak Lane, and engaging in prison ministry at Graterford Prison.  We also have a Christian Service Fund to help our immediate neighbors who come to the church seeking emergency assistance.  Our regional mission includes a youth summer mission trip to Meeting Ground, a homeless residence in Elkton, Maryland.  Our national mission includes participation in our denominational offerings:  Christmas Joy Offering and One Great Hour of Sharing.  We have also taken two intergenerational mission trips to Pearlington, Mississippi to help rebuild after Hurricane Katrina through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.  Our global mission includes support of Heifer International and Opportunity International.

We are currently exploring new ways to meet the needs of our community and invite all members of the congregation to become involved.

...you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in. ~ Isaiah 58:12
